The Founding Story

How it all began

"Every great airline begins with someone who simply loves to fly."

Skyward Air Virtual did not begin in a boardroom. It began, as most great things in the flight simulation world do, at a desk — late at night, headset on, the glow of a monitor illuminating a runway somewhere in the world that only existed in software. That pilot was Brian R., and the airline he was imagining would eventually become one of IVAO's recognised Virtual Airline Partners.

In the early days, Skyward was little more than a personal callsign and a folder of custom livery files. Brian had been flying on IVAO for some time, building hours, learning procedures, and developing a deep appreciation for the craft of virtual aviation done properly. What set him apart was not just the hours logged — it was the instinct to build something. To create a community around the discipline and joy of simulated flight.

The first Skyward Air livery was grey and gold — a slate fuselage with a bold gold cheatline and the now-iconic compass rose tail logo bearing the initials "SA". It was painted onto an A350 texture and flew quietly for months before anyone else wore it. That livery was a statement of intent: this was going to be a real airline, built with care, even if only a handful of people would ever see it.

Word spread through the IVAO community slowly, then all at once. Pilots were drawn in not by flashy recruitment drives but by the quality of what Skyward represented — professional standards, real-world procedures, and a founder who clearly cared about doing things right. The roster grew. Routes were added. The operations manual took shape. What had started as one person's passion project began to look and feel like a genuine airline operation.

The turning point came on 29 October 2021, when Skyward Air Virtual was officially recognised as an IVAO Virtual Airline Partner. It was a milestone that validated everything Brian had built — confirmation that the standards Skyward held itself to were recognised at the highest level of the online aviation community. The grey and gold livery that had started it all was retired shortly after, replaced by the bold crimson and amber that the fleet wears today — a new era, a broader sky.

Today, Skyward Air Virtual continues to grow — more pilots, more routes, more aircraft. But the founding principle has never changed: fly properly, treat the skies with respect, and build something worth being part of.

2021 — Retired

The Classic — Grey & Gold

The original Skyward Air livery. A slate grey fuselage with a bold gold cheatline running the length of the cabin, gold "SKYWARD" titles, and the compass rose tail logo bearing the "SA" initials. Registration N200SA. This was the livery that started it all — worn by a single A350 in the early days of the VA before the first pilot joined the roster. Retired following the IVAO partnership milestone and the rebrand to the current house colours.

Era 02

Late 2021 — Present

The Current — Crimson & Amber

Introduced following the IVAO VA Partnership milestone, the current livery represented a bold new chapter for Skyward Air Virtual. Deep burgundy crimson replaces the grey, with amber and gold "SKYWARD AIR" titles and the updated wing motif logo. The rebrand signalled growth — from a solo founder's project to a full virtual airline with a roster, SOPs, and an official network presence. Now worn across all three fleet types.

Route Network Growth

From first flight to global operations

The Skyward Air Virtual route network grew organically from the founder's own flying preferences — routes chosen not for commercial logic but for scenic interest, procedural complexity, and the joy of the journey. As the pilot roster expanded, so did the breadth of destinations.

Phase 1 The First Routes · 2021

Initial operations centred on North American and transatlantic routes, flown exclusively on the A350. Routes were hand-selected by Brian R. to cover a mix of short-haul hops and ultra-long sectors that showcased the flagship aircraft's range. The network was intentionally small — quality over quantity.

Phase 2 Fleet Expansion & IVAO Partnership · Late 2021

Following the IVAO partnership, the A320 was introduced to serve regional and domestic routes, opening up a broader range of accessible flying for new pilots joining the roster. The network expanded into Europe and the Middle East. Virtual Tour Itineraries were introduced as structured flying programmes for the community.

Phase 3 Global Network · Present

The addition of the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner extended Skyward's reach into Asia-Pacific and Oceania. The current network spans routes across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Asia, and the Pacific — operated across three aircraft types with no route restrictions by rank. Any pilot, any route, any day.

Skyward Air Virtual Founded

Brian R. begins flying under the Skyward Air callsign on IVAO. The classic grey and gold A350 livery is created. The first SOPs are drafted.

2021 · Mid

First Pilots Join the Roster

Word spreads through the IVAO community. The first external pilots join Skyward Air Virtual and begin flying under the SAV callsign.

🏆 IVAO Virtual Airline Partnership Granted

Skyward Air Virtual is officially recognised as an IVAO VA Partner — the defining milestone in the airline's history. The crimson and amber rebrand follows shortly after.

Late 2021

A320 Joins the Fleet & Network Expands

The Airbus A320 is introduced for short-haul and regional operations. The route network expands into Europe. Virtual Tour Itineraries launch as a community flying programme.

2022 — Present

Boeing 787-9 & Global Operations

The 787-9 Dreamliner extends Skyward's reach into Asia-Pacific and Oceania. ACARS integration introduced. The Doc Center and pilot resources are formalised. Skyward Air Virtual continues to grow.
